Life isn’t a shopping list

Hi everybody!

I often write my blog posts in the notes section of my phone, especially if I’m on public transport or don’t have my laptop to hand. I just found this one that I wrote almost two weeks ago and I thought I’d share it with you as it’s even more relevant now than it was when I wrote it! I’ll explain why later…

Sometimes it’s so easy to get swept up in future plans and forget to enjoy the moment.

I had a timeline in my head of what my twenties would look like… and it ain’t matching up! There’s a lot less independence than I expected, along with a little less money and a pretty big reliance on my parents for help (sorry Mum and Dad).

Sometimes I find myself itching to do my own thing, to be fully independent. I can get really frustrated about it.

Being fresh out of uni can actually feel like a pretty awkward place, and I know I’m not alone in this. You’ve just spent three or more years being, for the most part, independent, trying to master this whole adult-ing malarky. Then just when you think you’ve cracked it, it’s a huge adjustment all over again. Not a bad one, but a tricky one.

Instead of constantly striving for the milestones, remind yourself of the little gems in life. Because really I’m not unhappy. In fact, I’m loving life. It’s just not exactly the way I had planned it out.

But then- when did anything pan out exactly as we planned it? I honestly can’t think of a single time something has gone exactly how I planned. The truth is: we can’t plan everything. Some things we have accept are out of our control.

Life isn’t like going shopping, it’s not a list- it’s about being happy.

I’m enjoying the little things. Last week in Mallorca I relaxed, drank plenty of sangria/ wine/ beer/ you-name-it-I-drank-it #classy, consumed countless ice lollies and was swimming in the pool to the point my hair has a green tinge to it! It was exactly what I needed.

I realised my plan resembling that shopping list didn’t include all the little trips away. Nor did it include all the random moments of joy, the achievements or the bumps in the road… it mainly included the milestones. But the little steps leading up to them are just as significant.

You can try to plan, or even control, every little detail of life. But at the end of the day, it’s the things you don’t plan that can be the most magical, or even have the most impact on tomorrow.

I am trying my best to maintain this attitude because thing’s don’t always go to plan… like when I got made redundant two days after writing this! (If you fancy reading more about that check out my ‘I lost my job‘ post)Screen Shot 2018-04-12 at 13.38.40

I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. So while I am feeling pants about not having a job and (despite knowing I did nothing wrong) feeling like a bit of a failure- I know that some things you simply can’t prepare for.

So as a little Monday motivation: live in the moment, appreciate the little gems and know that every bump in the road simply makes you STRONGER.
